Straight, drop, and random: pattern matching explained

Understanding pattern repeat helps you order the right quantity and know what to expect at every seam.

Every patterned wallpaper has a repeat — the vertical distance before the design starts again. The repeat, and how it aligns across strips, affects both the look of the wall and how much paper you need.

A straight match means the pattern lines up horizontally across each strip at the same height. A half-drop match shifts every other strip by half the repeat, creating a diagonal rhythm. Random match papers, like many textures and grasscloths, have no alignment requirement.

Large repeats and drop matches create more waste, so ordering extra rolls from the same production batch is wise. Batches can differ slightly in color.

Scenic murals are a different discipline: panels are installed in a fixed sequence, and the placement of the composition relative to furniture, windows, and sightlines should be planned before any panel is hung.

When in doubt, share the product name and your room dimensions before ordering. A quick review can prevent a costly shortage.
